Swim School Lesson Pricing Review
Many swim schools regularly question whether they’re charging the correct amount for their lessons. Are prices too low? Are lessons undervalued? Or are they simply out of line with industry expectations?
To provide clarity, we analysed lesson pricing data from a significant number of swim schools across Australia and New Zealand. The goal was to identify realistic industry averages for both group and private lessons across the most common durations.
Below are the key findings from this analysis.
1. Non-Private (Group) Lesson Pricing
Outliers removed to create a realistic, true-to-market range
| Duration | Min | Median | Average | Max |
| 15 min | $19.00 | $19.00 | $20.82 | $24.00 |
| 30 min | $18.00 | $23.50 | $23.95 | $37.00 |
| 45 min | $18.00 | $24.00 | $26.19 | $48.00 |
| 60 min | $18.00 | $25.00 | $30.12 | $60.00 |
Key Insight:
Group lesson pricing is remarkably consistent across the industry, with most lessons sitting in the $20–$30 range depending on duration.
2. Private Lesson Pricing
Duration | Min | Median | Average | Max |
15 min | $22.50 | $30.50 | $30.48 | $65.00 |
30 min | $20.95 | $60.00 | $58.76 | $110.00 |
45 min | $30.00 | $69.00 | $77.52 | $107.00 |
60 min | $26.00 | $83.00 | $84.47 | $114.00 |
Key Insight:
Private lessons command a substantial premium, with average pricing rising sharply as lesson duration increases. Many swim schools underestimate the value of private instruction, and this data shows the market comfortably supports higher prices.
3. Weekend vs Weekday Pricing (Averages Only)
Non-Private Lessons (Outliers Removed)
Duration | Weekend Avg | Weekday Avg |
15 min | $19.00 | $21.50 |
30 min | $24.39 | $23.81 |
45 min | $28.69 | $25.83 |
60 min | $41.12 | $24.53 |
Key Insight:
Weekend pricing for group lessons is consistently higher, especially for longer sessions like 45–60 minutes. This reflects higher demand, higher staffing costs, and peak-time scheduling pressures.
Private Lessons
Duration | Weekend Avg | Weekday Avg |
15 min | $30.79 | $30.45 |
30 min | $60.51 | $58.20 |
45 min | $88.63 | $74.31 |
60 min | $81.04 | $86.18 |
Key Insight:
Private lesson pricing varies more widely.
- 30–45 min private lessons tend to be more expensive on weekends.
- 60 min sessions show the reverse trend, slightly higher on weekdays.
This may reflect instructor availability and how different swim schools schedule their premium one-on-one sessions.
What This Means for Swim Schools
Across group, private, weekday, and weekend comparisons, several patterns emerge:
✅ Group lessons have a stable pricing band of $20–$30
This forms a clear benchmark for swim schools reviewing their current fee structure.
✅ Private lesson prices vary significantly — and are often underpriced
Market medians and averages indicate that many swim schools may have room to increase private lesson fees without affecting demand.
✅ Weekend lessons support higher pricing
Families are more available, pools are busier, and instructors typically cost more to schedule — all of which justify a weekend premium.
